Botox® for Excessive Sweating
When topical treatments are not enough to control extreme underarm sweating, Botox® could be the solution. Topical treatments temporarily hinder the nerves’ ability to give off chemical signals that stimulate sweat production, but they don’t always work. When these chemical signals cannot get through to the sweat glands, the excessive sweating stops.
Do I have excessive underarm sweating?
You might consider Botox® treatment if your underarm sweating is adversely affecting your regular activities and topical treatments have not worked. Recognize how this problem is impacting your life, and then contact us to learn more about the products and treatments that will best suit your needs.
What is excessive underarm sweating?
Severe underarm sweating is also known as primary axillary hyperhidrosis, which involves overly productive sweat glands. We all need perspiration to help regulate our body temperatures, but individuals living with primary axillary hyperhidrosis sweat far more than what the body requires to remain cool.
How does Botox® for excessive sweating work?
Botox® can stop chemical signals from nerves that prompt sweat production. When these signals cannot reach the sweat glands, the severe sweating ends, but only in the area that is treated. Your body will still be capable of sweating in other places on the body.
You should see a marked decrease in underarm sweating within four weeks after the first treatment. If sweating continues, it’s possible that some sweat glands may have been missed during treatment. In that case, some sweating may still occur. If you do not notice a significant decrease in sweating, call Dr. Morgenstern to set up a follow-up consultation.
Where does the sweat go?
With Botox® treatments, no sweat can be produced in treated areas, so there is no sweat build-up. You will still sweat in other parts of the body. Patients who stop Botox® treatments will see sweating go back to pretreatment levels.
How effective is Botox® treatment?
Clinical studies on Botox treatment have demonstrated that:
- Of 104 individuals who underwent Botox® treatments, 57 saw an effective response when compared to six of 108 treated without Botox®. “Effective response” means the treatment administered prompted improvement measuring at a minimum of two grades on the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS).
- Of 104 patients treated with Botox®, 84 noticed a 50 percent decrease in sweating, compared to just 44 of 108 patients who were treated without Botox®.
